Aerodynamics

A STEM class on aerodynamics that focuses on the use of a wind tunnel and clay models can be a fun and engaging way for students to learn about the science of how air flows around and affects objects. In this class, students may:

  • Learn about the basic principles of fluid dynamics: Students may learn about how air behaves as a fluid, and how it is affected by factors such as density, viscosity, pressure, and temperature. They may also learn about how air flows around different types of objects, and how this affects the objects’ motion and stability.

  • Use a wind tunnel to study the effects of air on different objects: Students may use a wind tunnel to study how air flows around different types of objects, such as planes, cars, and missiles. They may use a variety of sensors and measuring tools to collect data on the objects’ performance and stability as they move through the wind tunnel.

  • Use clay models to study the effects of air on different objects: Students may use clay models to study how air flows around different types of objects, such as planes, cars, and missiles. They may use a variety of tools and techniques to shape the clay into different shapes and forms, and use the wind tunnel to study how these shapes affect the performance and stability of the objects.

  • Use their findings to optimize the performance of different objects: Students may use the data and insights they gather from their experiments to optimize the performance of different objects. For example, they may use their findings to design more efficient and effective aircraft, or to improve the performance of sports equipment and other everyday objects.

Overall, a STEM class on aerodynamics that uses a wind tunnel and clay models can be a fun and engaging way for students to learn about the science of how air flows and affects objects, and how this knowledge can be used to solve practical problems and improve the performance of a variety of systems.

Using the Reuseum wind tunnel and dry ice, we use model cars the children have built to study air flow and aerodynamics.

For most that don’t know, aerodynamics deals with motion of air and fluids which are motion relative or to put it simple, its a way to have objects move through air. For example, how do airplanes fly or how does a kite fly?
